2살 때부터 피아노를 치기시작한 애롤 가너(1921-1977)는 악보보는 법을 배우지 않았지만 78장의 레코드를 듣고 지즈 콘프리(Zez Confrey) 등의 ‘노벌티(novelty)’ 스타일, 즉 왼손으로 꾸준히 코드 리듬을 연주함으로써 오른손으로는 매우 자유롭게 멜로디를 구사할 수 있게 해주는 스타일로 연주법을 배웠다. 이것은 나중에 선구자가 되는 스윙이 심한 재즈 스타일의 완벽한 밑거름이 되었다. 7세 때 그룹 캔디 키즈와 함께 피츠버그의 KDKA 라디오 방송국에 출연하기 시작했으며 11세 무렵에는 앨리게니강(江)을 주유하는 배에서 연주했다. 1940년대 초 뉴욕으로 옮긴 뒤 사람들의 주목을 끌기 시작했으며 곧 첫 음반을 취입했다. 1950년에 국제적인 명성을 얻었고, 그때부터 사망할 때까지 수많은 국내외 순회 연주를 가졌으며 상당한 분량의 레코드를 취입했다.

애롤 가너의 대표곡 "Mysty'의 연주를 듣기만 하다가 동영상으로 보니 말이 안나온다.

팻 메스니의 말년 앨범으로 그보다 18살 어린 찰리 헤이든과 협업하여 만든 불후의 명반이다. 둘 다 유년기에 미조리주에서 자란 공통점이 있어서인지 두 재즈계의 거장은 마치 영화의 한 장면처럼 어린시절 미조리에서의 추억을 잔잔하게 표현해내고 있다. 특히 영화 '시네마천국'의 메이타이틀과 러브송은 앨범 자켓사진과 너무나 잘 어울어 진다.
