천재 재즈 락밴드 Steely Dan의 7번째 스튜디오 앨범 'Gaucho'는 오늘날 많은 재즈팬들에게는 신화적 앨범으로 남아있지만  이 앨범이 탄생하기까지, 그리고 발매 이후 겪어야 했던 엄청난 심적 고통은 이 천재 뮤지션들을 해채하는데까지 이르게 했으니 어쩌면 그들에게는 저주와 같은 음반인지도 모르겠다. 전작 "Aja"의 엄청난 성공은 Steely Dan으로 하여금 그렇지 않아도 완벽주의자들이었던 그들을 더욱 더 완벽한 음악을 만들어야 한다는 강박관념을 갖게 만들었다. 2년 가까이 녹음실에서,  최고의 사운드를 만들어내기 위해 적어도 42명 이상의 당대 최고의 뮤지션들을 초청하여 음악녹음을 하면서 엄청난 재정적 어려움과 창작의 고통을 함께 겪어야 했으며, 또 한편으로는 MCA, Warner Bros와 발매될 앨범에 대한 권리를 두고 법적 싸움을 싸워야 했다. 앨범이 발매된 후에도 문제는 계속 되었는데 타이틀곡 "Gaucho"에 대한 저작권 문제로 재즈피아니스인 Keith Jarrett에와의 소송문제에 휩싸였으며(결국 패소하여 키스자렛과의 공동저작권이 인정됨) 앨범마져 기대 이하의 저조한 판매고를 기록하면서 결국 이듬해 팀을 해체하기에 이르렀던 것이다. 2000년 "Two Against Nature"로 다시 화려하게 재기에 성공하까지 그들이 겪어야 했던 근 20년간의 공백은 한 장의 명반을 만들기 위해 치뤄야할 고통으로는 너무나 큰 것이었는지도 모른다. / hanihani101♧

앨범에 참여한 음악가만 30명이 넘는 괴물같은 앨범 'Aja'는 포크, R&B, 재즈, 소울, Rock 등 모든 장르의 이디엄들의 조합으로 빚어낸 스틸리 댄의 최고의 앨범일 뿐 아니라 재즈계 명음반으로도 오늘날까지 추앙받고 있다. 특히 Steve Gadd의 드럼이 일품인 타이틀곡 "Aja", 마일 데이비스 사단의 색소폰 연주자 Wayne Shorter의 멋진 색소폰 연주가 돋보이는 "Decon Blues"등의 주옥과 같은 명곡으로 채워져 있다. 재미있는 사실은 앨범 타이틀 "Aja"가 한국어라는 것이다. 1960년대 후반의 "농밀했던" 재즈계에서 "처녀항해Maiden Voyage"의 스마트한 앨범 자킷과 미래 지향적이며 청신한 사운드는 젊은 재즈 팬들의 마음에 선명한 각인을 남겼다. 마치 오랫동안 꽉 닫혀 있었던 집의 창문을 누군가의 손이 홀짝 열어젖힌 듯한 기분이 들 정도였다.

이 레코드를 들으면 당시의 재즈 카페의 풍경이 떠오른다. 결국, 우리들은 마음속으로 누군가가 손을 뻗어 그 창문을 열어주기를 기대하고 있었던 것이리라. 하지만 좀처럼 창문은 열리지 않았다. 아니 열리기는 했는데, 그 안쪽에 벽이 또 버티고 있는 경우도 적지 않았다. 하지만 이 "처녀 항해"는 어떤 의미에서는 진짜였다. 그들이 열어준 것은 진짜 창문이었다. 안으로 들어온 것은 진자 공기였다. 간혹 그런 음악이 있다. 그것은 인생의 어느 길목에서 만난 아름다운 사람처럼 우리들 마음속에서 언제가지고 빛을 잃지 않는다.

2011 two CD release from the Jazz pianist On April 9, 2011 Keith Jarrett returned to South America for the first time in decades to perform three solo concerts. The third and final concert found him in Rio de Janeiro in front of a packed house and enthralled audience. Inspired by the electrifying atmosphere, the pianist pulls a broad range of material from the ether: thoughtful/reflective pieces, abstract sound-structures, pieces that fairly vibrate with energy.
