1960년대 후반의 "농밀했던" 재즈계에서 "처녀항해Maiden Voyage"의 스마트한 앨범 자킷과 미래 지향적이며 청신한 사운드는 젊은 재즈 팬들의 마음에 선명한 각인을 남겼다. 마치 오랫동안 꽉 닫혀 있었던 집의 창문을 누군가의 손이 홀짝 열어젖힌 듯한 기분이 들 정도였다.

이 레코드를 들으면 당시의 재즈 카페의 풍경이 떠오른다. 결국, 우리들은 마음속으로 누군가가 손을 뻗어 그 창문을 열어주기를 기대하고 있었던 것이리라. 하지만 좀처럼 창문은 열리지 않았다. 아니 열리기는 했는데, 그 안쪽에 벽이 또 버티고 있는 경우도 적지 않았다. 하지만 이 "처녀 항해"는 어떤 의미에서는 진짜였다. 그들이 열어준 것은 진짜 창문이었다. 안으로 들어온 것은 진자 공기였다. 간혹 그런 음악이 있다. 그것은 인생의 어느 길목에서 만난 아름다운 사람처럼 우리들 마음속에서 언제가지고 빛을 잃지 않는다.

2011 two CD release from the Jazz pianist On April 9, 2011 Keith Jarrett returned to South America for the first time in decades to perform three solo concerts. The third and final concert found him in Rio de Janeiro in front of a packed house and enthralled audience. Inspired by the electrifying atmosphere, the pianist pulls a broad range of material from the ether: thoughtful/reflective pieces, abstract sound-structures, pieces that fairly vibrate with energy.

2살 때부터 피아노를 치기시작한 애롤 가너(1921-1977)는 악보보는 법을 배우지 않았지만 78장의 레코드를 듣고 지즈 콘프리(Zez Confrey) 등의 ‘노벌티(novelty)’ 스타일, 즉 왼손으로 꾸준히 코드 리듬을 연주함으로써 오른손으로는 매우 자유롭게 멜로디를 구사할 수 있게 해주는 스타일로 연주법을 배웠다. 이것은 나중에 선구자가 되는 스윙이 심한 재즈 스타일의 완벽한 밑거름이 되었다. 7세 때 그룹 캔디 키즈와 함께 피츠버그의 KDKA 라디오 방송국에 출연하기 시작했으며 11세 무렵에는 앨리게니강(江)을 주유하는 배에서 연주했다. 1940년대 초 뉴욕으로 옮긴 뒤 사람들의 주목을 끌기 시작했으며 곧 첫 음반을 취입했다. 1950년에 국제적인 명성을 얻었고, 그때부터 사망할 때까지 수많은 국내외 순회 연주를 가졌으며 상당한 분량의 레코드를 취입했다.
