Still Beautiful ?

베를리오즈(프랑스)의 대표작, 출세작이기도 하며 낭만파 교향곡 중 손꼽는 명작이다. 「어느 예술가의 생애의 에피소드」라는 타이틀을 가졌으며, 자신의 실연에 바탕을 둔 이상한 환상을 이야기풍으로 엮은 표제 음악이다. 당시 그는 파리 음악원의 학생이었는데, 마침 파리에 와있었던 영국 셰익스피어 악단의 상연을 보고 오펠리아와 줄리에트를 연기한 주연 여우 해리엣 스미스슨을 열렬히 사모하게 되었다. 고민한 끝에 결심하고 편지로 구혼을 했으나, 당대의 인기 여우가 가난하고 무명인 음악도를 상대할 리가 없었다. 이 실연이 「환상 교향곡(교향곡)」을 쓰게 하는 직접적인 동기가 되었다고 일컬어진다. 후에 이 두 사람은 맺어지지만 행복한 생활은 아니었다.

이 곡의 표제는 자작의 것으로 실연한 젊은 예술가가 절망한 나머지 아편 자살을 꾀하지만, 혼수상태에 빠져 기괴한 환상에 사로잡히게 된다. 이 환상 속에서 연인은 언제나 정해진 선율이 되어 나타난다고 하는 것인데, 이 선율이 이른바 ‘고정 악상’으로 고정 악상의 사고 방식은 낭만파 음악가들에게 계승되고, 이윽고 바그너(독일)의 ‘지도 동기’로 발전해 간다. 이야기는 5개의 악장으로 나누어져 진전하고, 연인을 나타내는 고정 악장은 각 악장에 변형되면서 나타나 그녀의 마음의 변화를 교묘하게 표현한다. 

제1악장 「꿈·정열 Rêverie, passions」

예술가는 아직 연인을 만나지 못했다. 그의 마음에는 불안과 초조와 동경이 교차하지만, 이윽고 염원하던 연인을 발견한다. 목관이 불안에 사로잡힌 듯한 동기를 연주하고 라르고 c단조 4/4의 장대한 서주를 도입한다. 이어 약음화된 현이 초조와 동경이 교차되는 선율을 연주하고, 이것이 확대되면서 완전히 고조된다. 악상은 흥분된 뜨거운 경과구로 크게 고조되지만, 이윽고 밝은 희망을 연상케 하듯이 C장조로 바뀌고, 마지막에 쾌활한 가락으로 서주를 마친다.

제2악장 「무도회 Un bal」

왈츠. Allegro non troppo A장조 3/8. 축제일의 떠들썩한 무도회에서 예술가는 또다시 연인의 모습을 발견한다.

슬픈 현의 트레몰로와 하프의 아르페지오가 잠시 계속되고, 왈츠의 리듬을 탄 유려한 선율이 화려하게 전개된다. 이것이 일단락되면 플루트와 오보에가 고정 악상의 변형을 연주하고 연인이 즐겁게 춤추는 광경을 그린다. 또다시 왈츠가 흐르고 마지막에 클라리넷이 한 번 더 고정 악상을 연주하는데 코다의 격렬한 고조에 지워지고 곡을 마친다.

제3악장 「전원의 풍경 Scène aux champs」

Adagio F장조 6/8. 어느 여름날 저녁, 예술가는 들에 나가 두 사람의 양치기가 번갈아 부는 피리 소리를 듣는다. 연인에의 밝은 희망이 그의 마음에 평안을 주고 있다. 그러나 문득 그녀가 배신하지는 않을까 하고 고민하기 시작한다. 그리고 양치기가 부는 피리 소리도 한 사람밖에 들리지 않는다. 어느 사이엔가 날은 완전히 저물고 멀리서 천둥소리가 들리고 고독한 정적이 덮힌다.

오보에와 잉글리시 호른이 양치기가 번갈아 부는 피리의 선율을 연주한다. 이윽고 전원의 황혼을 생각케 하듯이 바이올린과 플루트가 로 중심 선율을 연주하고 이 악상이 잠시 발전한다.

평온한 곡상이 전개되는 가운데 낮은 음으로 현이 고뇌를 나타내는 듯한 격렬한 하행 음형을 연주하고, 이것을 덮는 것처럼 플루트와 오보에가 고정 악상을 연주한다. 연인에의 불안은 늘어갈 뿐이다. 또다시 중심 선율이 한가롭게 노래된 뒤 첫머리의 피리 소리가 연주된다. 이번에는 잉글리시 호른뿐, 그것도 팀파니가 연주하는 먼 천둥 소리에 방해를 받아 희미하게 들린다. 현의 짧은 후주로 쓸쓸하게 끝난다.

이 악장은 베토벤(독일)의 「전원」과 곧잘 비교된다. 묘사 음악의 걸작으로, 특히 끝 부분에서 그런 느낌이 강하다.

제4악장 「단두대로의 행진 Marche au supplice」

Allegro non troppo g단조 4/4. 질투에 미친 예술가는 꿈속에서 연인을 죽여 버린다. 사형을 선고 받고 단두대로의 음산한 행진이 시작된다.

약음화된 호른이 짧은 도입 음형을 반복하고, 팀파니의 연타가 높아지면 첼로와 베이스의 유니즌이 로 무거운 발걸음을 연상케 하는 주제를 연주한다. 절망적인 행진이 전개되면 현의 피치카토를 수반한 파곳의 경묘한 악상이 이것에 알랑거리듯이 붙어 따라간다. 급격히 크레셴도하여 악마의 개선가를 연상케 하는 듯한 당당한 주제가 투티로 반복된다.

이들 두 개의 주제가 타악기의 연타를 섞어 번갈아 나타나 악상을 고조시키고, 마지막에 클라리넷이 일순간 연인을 회상하지만, 전 관현악에 의해 날아가 버리고 팀파니의 연타 속에 끝난다.

제5악장 「악마들의 밤의 꿈 Songe d’une nuit du sabbat」

예술가의 장례식에는 그로테스크한 요괴와 마녀들이 환성을 지르고 있다. 예술가는 그들과 함께 마녀의 춤을 구경하고 있는데, 여기에 나와 있던 연인은 이전의 고상한 모습을 잃고 마치 창부처럼 품위없게 그를 비웃고 있다.

음산한 현의 트레몰로가 Larghetto C장조 4/4의 장대한 서주를 도입한다. 관악기가 연주하는 닭의 울음소리는 기괴한 분위기를 더없이 고조시킨다. 이어 Allegro로 옮기고 꾸밈음에 의해 변형된 고정 악상이 클라리넷에 의해 비웃는 것처럼 연주된다. 이것을 계기로 요괴들의 열광적인 춤이 한바탕 계속되고 연인도 정신없이 이것에 참가한다. 갑자기 파곳·첼로·베이스에 의한 엄숙한 레치타티보풍의 선율이 연주되고 이어 C음과 G음의 종이 울려 퍼지는, 요괴들의 축하연이 개시된다. 파곳과 튜바가 그레고리오 성가 중의 하나인 「분노의 날」을 무겁게 연주하고, 종의 울림 속에서 「악마의 론도」가 시작된다.

    환상교향곡 (Symphonie Fantastique op.14)으로 유명한 프랑스 후기낭만주의 작곡가 베를리오즈(Berlioz, L. Hector 1803~1869)가 1834~1841년에 걸쳐 '테오필 고티에(Théophile Gautier 1811~1872)'의 시 6편에 곡을붙여 만든 가곡집이으로 《여름밤》의 노래들은 사랑이라는 공통된 주제를 지니고 있다. 제1곡과 제6곡은 젊은 시절의 낙천주의를 표현한다. 제1곡인 <빌라넬레>는 봄철 연인들의 단순한 즐거움을 노래하며, 마지막 곡인 <미지의 섬>은 미지의 섬으로 떠나는 항해를 연상케 한다. 환상곡 분위기의 화려한 <장미의 유령>은 장미의 정령이 무도회에서 자신을 꼽고 있던 사람을 죽음에 이르게 했지만 그래도 자신을 소중히 여긴다는 내용을 담고 있다. 가장 우울한 노래인 <호수에서>는 죽은 연인에 대한 슬픔을 담고 있다. <부재>는 멀리 떠난 연인에 대한 그리움을 담고 있다. <묘지에서>는 비석을 내려다보는 비둘기의 노래가 연상되는데, 선율의 병적인 감미로움이 매혹적이면서 죽음을 암시하는 것 같다. London Symphony Orchestra, Colin daivis 지휘로 미국이 자랑하는 흑인 소프라노 Jessye Norman의 호소력 짙은 목소리가 특히 돋보이는 앨범이다. / hanihani101 ♧

최초의 초현실주의자로 평가받는 히에로니무스 보슈(Hieronymus Bosch(1450?~1516)의 대표작인 "세속적 쾌락의 정원(The Garden of Earthly Delights)을 앨범표지로 선택한 Deep Purple의 3집앨범인 "Deep Purple"(1969)은 Rod Evans가 보컬을 보컬을 맡고 있던  Deep Purple 1기에 녹음된 앨범으로 Deep Purple 최고의 수작으로 평가되고 있다. Formula 3과 Latte E Milele 등 당시 이탈리아와 영국 Rock의 프로그래시브와 싸이키댈릭, 클래식을 접목한 예술적인 작품들이 중흥기를 이루는 가운데 그 정점에 서있는 작품으로 T.S. Eliot의 황무지 "The Waste Land"에서 영감을 받아 Ritchie Blackmore와 Jon Lord가 공동으로 작업한 불멸의 명곡 "April"과 "Lalena"의 대작들이 들어있다. 참고로 앨범표지에 보슈의 작품이 흑백으로 인쇄된 것은 의도된 것이 아니라 인쇄상의 실수였다고 한다. / hanihani101♧

메탈리카와 샌프란시스코 심포니와의 라이브 실황을 담은 이 앨범은 말 그대로 충격에 충격이었다. Master of Puppets 자체가 클라이막스로 가면서 사람을 점점 더 미치게 만들면서 절정의 오르가즘을 느끼게 하는데 여기에 오케스트라까지 합세하여 말 그대로 헷필드의 목소리와 커크 해밋의 기타는 미친 말이 용으로 변하여 하늘 끝까지 뚫고 나갈듯이 울부짓는다. 반드시 차 안에서 엄청난 볼륨으로 들어야 그 맛을 느낄 수 있다. 다만 운전중 나도 모르게 최고 시속을 밟을 수 있으니 그것은 주의하자 ^^

중학교 시절 친구 용만이는 Judas Priest가 최고라고 했고 난 Deep Purple이 최고라고 했다. 그 중에서도 락발라드 Soldier of Fortune은 그 슬픈 가락때문에 마음이 더 끌렸고, 지금도 술한잔하고 노래방이라도 가게되면 부르는 18번이 되었다. 제목이 무슨 뜻인지도 모르고 들었는데 나이가 들면서 내 삶을 되돌아 보니 나의 노래이기도 했다. 그렇게 먹고 살기위해 돈을 좇아 용병의 삶을 살아가야했고 지금도 그 채바뀌같은 굴레를 벗어나지 못하는 우리 인간의 삶에 대한 고찰이 이 노래이다. / hanihani101
